This summer will be our first big adventure in our new (to us) Coachmen Beyond camper van. We head to western Wyoming and southern Montana to see many of those Old West Trail Country sites and drives as well as some places that will be adventures that are newer. Some of the stops on our summer trip:
Wyoming
South Pass City & Atlantic City: Authentic gold rush ghost towns with restored buildings and interpretive sites.
Oregon Trail Sites: Independence Rock, Split Rock, and Register Cliff for a deep dive into pioneer history.
Fort Bridger State Historic Site: Originally established as a trading post by Jim Bridger—very atmospheric and well-preserved.
Dubois: A charming town with the National Bighorn Sheep Center and nearby Togwotee Pass for breathtaking scenery.
Montana
Virginia City & Nevada City: Living history towns where you can walk through the preserved main street, ride a narrow-gauge railroad, and maybe even catch a reenactment.
Bannack State Park: One of the best-preserved ghost towns in the West. You can wander through old buildings with few barriers.
Big Hole National Battlefield: A poignant site from the Nez Perce War, with a visitor center and trails.
